Toe Jam is quickly becoming a staple in Tacoma hip-hop and youth culture. The now monthly party series is hosted at Tacoma’s 733 event space. The hosts seek to provide a positive party environment for hip-hop lovers and members of the local community to let out some pent up energy. For Toe Jam 3, hosts Aramis and Tayzoven brought in Seattle’s DoNormaal and the Women.Weed.WiFi collective to perform along side them. In addition, the space also played host to local photographer Aaron Matthew’s gallery show in the entry space. The event was packed and brought out a number of Tacoma’s most prominent artists & musicians to come support the visiting artists and hosts.
Toe Jam’s goal is to create an environment where guests feel comfortable being themselves, dancing, and having a good time. Host Tayzoven described their desire to create an environment free of people with too-cool-to-have-fun attitudes and a space where everyone felt comfortable and included. The name itself is symbolic of their goal stemming from wanting people to go so hard they jam their toe.
Aaron Matthew’s show showcased a number of film photos he had taken in and around Tacoma including many featuring local artists. In the next room, the Women.Weed.WiFi collective were selling zines, merchandise, and a number of other products. The collective also provided DJs for the night and for DoNormaal’s performance.
The evening culminated in a performance by one of Seattle’s hip-hop scene’s up and coming stars DoNormaal. The space created a very intimate performance with DoNormaal at the same level as the crowd. Despite some technical difficulties, she put on a great performance that lasted late into the night. Toe Jam 4 most recently featured a DJ set by Khris P of ILLFIGHTYOU fame, DJ set. Overall, the events have been a great success. Be on the lookout for Toe Jam 5 coming soon. If you want to find out more information about Toe Jam, their social media is listed below.
